Prof. Sharon Hanscom | EditorHello! I have a Ph.D. in English and Cultural Studies from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., an MA in English Literature from George Mason University, and a BA from George Mason University in English. I have taught both on-ground and online for the last 15 years. My academic areas of concentration are in English Literature, Women’s Studies, Cultural Studies, Composition, and Research.

Previous to teaching online full time, I was an English and Women’s Studies lecturer at George Washington University where I obtained my doctoral degree. While completing my graduate studies there and teaching in both the English as well as Women’s Studies Department, I also worked as the coordinator for the annual writing composition conference for student writers. I was one of several writing instructors that built the annual conference from the ground up and then found myself in charge of 300 new participants after our third year. This position really helped broaden my experiences working with students who are new to the field of public speaking and publishing their own academic work. I also take great pride in the cross-curricular efforts we made to bring many diverse departments into our annual conference. A number of our students went on to publish work from these conferences and most students felt that the experience of giving a talk on their writing from an English course gave them a great deal of confidence in their ideas.

I have also worked as a freelance writer and editor for a non-profit health organization that studies the impact of health grants on community organizations. Although my title was summary writer and editor, I learned a great deal about the importance of grant writing for emerging communities and groups. This was perhaps one of the best jobs ever. I worked with some of the best freelance editors in Washington, D.C. We had a creative "team" environment. Overall, the experience greatly aided my own knowledge of English and the importance of good writing skills.

I am now living in Portland, Oregon, near my family and with my two Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Ffion & Gryffin, my horses, Blackjack & Braam. I really love the Pacific Northwest. Portland is a low-key and fun city with lots of my favorite things in life: bookstores, coffeehouses, jazz clubs, dog parks!, and a great appreciation for the outdoors. I love that both the mountains and the beaches are within an hour’s drive from the city, and I like that so many urbanites like myself are able to have access to nature. I am looking forward to getting to working with you on your project.
